I had a hard time choosing the sixth song in this collection, mainly because there are so many more Elton John songs I love and wanted to make cocktails for. Once I was able to gather my ideas for the other five cocktails, I began to get a sense of what I wanted this one to look like, and matched up the song from there. I actually didn’t intend on this drink coming out layered as a full rainbow, but seeing how it’s Pride Month and an Elton John cocktail, it was the best happy accident possible. This song is one of my favorite ballads of his, and I wanted the drink to look like a sunset (fittingly), so I used some classic flavors like vodka, blue curaçao, and orange juice to create this stunning layered cocktail.
Like any great Elton John ballad, this song is filled with hearty piano chords and powerful drums over a chorus of harmonies. The imagery in his lyrics were too good to pass up using, and the rainbow effect is even more significant than the simpler blue-to-orange I originally wanted. The song is unassuming at first, as is the simple, citrusy taste of this cocktail–but like so many of these inspired cocktails, the more you drink/listen, the greater the pairing becomes. I can’t think of a more classic, monumental song choice deserving of a show-stopping cocktail like this one.
