Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
I knew I wanted a classic rock-inspired cocktail that made me feel like the epitome of “cool” when I drank it, so naturally I turned to my many playlists and just listened for the right song. The second “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix came on, it clicked for me. Now, I know “purple haze martinis” aren’t exactly far and few between, but they’re popular for a reason. By far one of the coolest songs known to man deserves a cocktail that’s just as fitting, and what’s more effortlessly cool than a gin martini? (A purple gin martini.)
This song starts off with a strong groove, and so does this cocktail. It’s dry, so the main focus is the floral notes of the gin–and it hits you quick just like that first riff. You also get a hint of citrus from the splash of fresh orange juice and the soaked garnish, which puts a fun twist on an otherwise brazen cocktail (you can add a bit of soda water to temper down the alcohol if dry martinis aren’t quite your thing). It’s certainly quick to give you a buzz, which is the perfect compliment to Hendrix’s heavy, psychedelic hit. Plus you look cool holding it, which is half the point, right?
Ingredients:
2 oz Empress 1908 gin
0.5 oz dry vermouth
splash of fresh orange juice
plum soda water to top off (optional)
orange twist for garnish
Stir all ingredients together with ice and strain into martini glass. Top with plum flavored soda water if desired. Garnish with orange twist.
