FAQ
You can use either! I used plain chopped pecans and topped with flaky salt before serving, but you can use pre-roasted and salted pecans for an even more toasty flavor!
These brownies are extremely fudgy, rather than cakey or crumbly. They use both cocoa powder and melted chocolate, and they have a high fat content, so they’re denser than your average brownie and slice very easily, almost like a piece of fudge!
You can store these brownies in a sealed container in the fridge or at room temperature for up to about a week, or in the freezer for 2-3 months.

- 5 tbsp unsalted butter room temp
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 eggs room temp
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 oz semisweet chocolate chopped
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour sifted
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder sifted
- ¼ tsp kosher salt
- 1 cup milk
For the pecan layer:
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 egg room temp
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1¼ cups chopped pecans
- 1 pinch flaky salt plus extra for topping
Instructions
For the brownie layer:
- Preheat the oven to 350ºF and prepare an 8x8in baking pan with a parchment paper sling.
- In a medium sized bowl, melt the butter, then mix the sugar into the warm butter until fully combined and glossy.
- Whisk in the eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract until the mixture is pale and smooth.
- Melt the chocolate in a separate bowl, then fold it into the egg mixture until combined.
- Sift the dry ingredients into the bowl and gently fold them into the wet mixture, adding in the milk in small portions to thin out the batter while whisking until fully combined.
- Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 15-20 minutes until the brownie layer is mostly set. Remove the pan from the oven and let it cool slightly before adding the pecan layer.
For the pecan pie layer:
- In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients for the pecan layer together.
- Pour the pecan mixture over the slightly cooled brownies, smoothing out the pecans into an even layer. Bake for another 20 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean.
- Top the brownies with an extra pinch of flaky salt and let them cool to room temperature before slicing and serving.
