Ingredients

For the brownie layer:

  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter room temp
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs room temp
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 oz semisweet chocolate chopped
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour sifted
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder sifted
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 cup milk

For the pecan layer:

  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg room temp
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • cups chopped pecans
  • 1 pinch flaky salt plus extra for topping

Instructions

For the brownie layer:

  • Preheat the oven to 350ºF and prepare an 8x8in baking pan with a parchment paper sling.
  • In a medium sized bowl, melt the butter, then mix the sugar into the warm butter until fully combined and glossy.
  • Whisk in the eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract until the mixture is pale and smooth.
  • Melt the chocolate in a separate bowl, then fold it into the egg mixture until combined.
  • Sift the dry ingredients into the bowl and gently fold them into the wet mixture, adding in the milk in small portions to thin out the batter while whisking until fully combined.
  • Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 15-20 minutes until the brownie layer is mostly set. Remove the pan from the oven and let it cool slightly before adding the pecan layer.

For the pecan pie layer:

  • In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients for the pecan layer together.
  • Pour the pecan mixture over the slightly cooled brownies, smoothing out the pecans into an even layer. Bake for another 20 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean.
  • Top the brownies with an extra pinch of flaky salt and let them cool to room temperature before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Utilize mise en place! Make sure you have all of your ingredients prepped and ready before you begin making this recipe - it will help save you time and keep you organized.
  • Get clean slices every time by running your knife under super hot water to warm it up, then wiping it off on a towel before making each slice.
  • Add a drizzle. For a touch of something extra sweet, drizzle on a classic icing or even some melted peanut butter!
  • Top with chocolate. These brownies are super fudgy and chocolatey as-is, but you can add some chocolate chips on top of the pecan layer for some extra melty goodness.
