We’re back for round two, everyone. During my second month-long trip to Edinburgh, I got to try some more delicious foods and drinks in the city, and I truly find myself craving this stuff on a regular basis. Edinburgh consistently has served me some of my favorite meals, snacks, and drinks, and each time I visit the city it all just gets better and better!
This list has a bit of everything, from sit-down restaurants to great takeout options and even mobile coffee stands. Pizza, burgers, slow cooked beef and mash, donuts, sausage rolls, sandwiches as big as your head - you name it, Edinburgh has it! If you’re a serious lover of food, or just have some serious cravings while you’re in the city, these 10 foodie spots in Edinburgh are gonna be must-visits whenever you find yourself in the city.
✰✰✰
1. OINK
On my first trip to Edinburgh, I passed by Oink and had no idea what it was, but I saw the whole roasted pigs hanging in the window and honestly wasn’t super appealed to go inside. After doing some research for my second trip, I realized it wasn’t just a butcher shop, but in fact a sandwich shop–and a damn good one at that! They gave me probably the best pulled pork sandwich (or hog roast) I’ve ever had in my life, complete with sage and onion stuffing and a delicious homemade chili cheese sauce. Yes, I devoured half of it on my walk home.
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Oink (160g) on white bread with sage & onion stuffing and chili cheese sauce
2. Civerinos
I’d seen Civerinos all over social media during my first trip here in 2022, so I knew I needed to try it on my return to Edinburgh! I was feeling takeout one night and Civerinos was the perfect spot; it kept up super well during delivery and was still warm and fresh when it came time to dig in. I went with a classic pepperoni and it did not disappoint–their donuts with Nutella were delicious, too!
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Pepperoni pizza
- French fries
- Hot cinnamon zeppole donuts
3. Homies Pizza
I was SO excited to finally try Homies since they had opened just as I was leaving Edinburgh in 2022–they serve unique Detroit-style pizzas (which aren’t super common in the UK), and I knew I was definitely going to crave a big slice of American pizza at some point overseas, so I had them in my mind for when the time came. I got their Pesto Chicken Crunch, which was topped with red sauce, mozzarella, fried chicken, and pesto mayo, and it honestly blew my mind. The dough was so thick and soft, but the crust was just crunchy and cheesy enough for the perfect balance. Do yourself a favor and get Homies if you’re in Edinburgh!
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Pesto chicken crunch
4. Makars Mash Bar
I kick myself on a weekly basis for not getting Makars Mash sooner than I did. I literally still dream about this beef shoulder: it’s slow cooked so it literally melts in your mouth, and it’s covered in a horseradish-infused dark gravy that’s just to die for. I chose smoked bacon and spring onion mash to go with the beef, and it was absolutely delicious. It’s a mash bar, so you get to choose your main (meat or veggie options) and then a mashed potato to go alongside it. It’s like a bougie mix and match menu and I loved every bit of it. I will be back to try more combos as soon as humanly possible.
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Beef shoulder with bacon and spring onion mash
5. Butta Burger
Don’t come for me, but I got a lot of takeout in Edinburgh this time around. Yes, it’s usually better to dine in somewhere to get the full experience and best food, but your girl did a lot of walking and photo-taking for a month straight, and most nights I just wanted to eat take-out on my couch and binge One Tree Hill… so I did. One of those take-out orders was this delicious chicken sandwich from Butta Burger: named the “Gravy Chick,” this sandwich is made with fried chicken, house pickles, and homemade chicken gravy mayo (three of my favorite things). If it was this good after being delivered, I can’t imagine how insanely good it is eaten fresh at their restaurant. Definitely a must-try!
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Gravy Chick
6. Alby's
I forget how I came across Alby’s, but when I did, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a location right near my Airbnb. I grabbed a sandwich on my way home one afternoon, and even though their Instagram handle is literally “@bighotsandwiches”, I was again pleasantly surprised by just how big they actually were. It may as well have been two sandwiches in one! They have a small rotating menu of sandwich options, so from the four that were available at the time, I got their ham hock and pea which was absolutely delicious. It’s made with smoked ham hock, pea & pickled onion fritters, malt vinegar mayo, crisps, and rocket (arugula). Just an all around A+ sandwich.
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Ham hock & pea (no longer serving)
7. Kilted Donut
I couldn’t leave Edinburgh without a trip to the Kilted Donut, even if it meant walking with a paper bag full of donuts in the rain to get home. Yes, the bag did rip multiple times and eventually soak through. No, the donuts were not harmed. If you’re in the mood for a huge, super sweet, uniquely flavored donut (or four), this is the spot for you!
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Cranachan
- Biscoff
- Cinnamon swirl
- Cookie explosion
8. Uplands Roast
The most iconic hot chocolate in Edinburgh! If you find yourself in the Meadows, or craving the most delicious hot cocoa you’ve ever had, head over to Uplands Roast and order the Proper Hot Chocolate. It’s filled with toasted marshmallows, cinnamon, and chocolate shavings, and it’s clearly the prettiest drink to ever exist. I don’t even remember how many of these I got during my month-long trip, but it’s definitely in the double digits.
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Proper hot chocolate
9. Edinburgh Farmers Market
I loooove a farmers market, and the markets in Edinburgh are unreal! There’s a little bit of everything at each one, so you’re bound to find something delicious like I did. This gourmet haggis sausage roll was incredible, as were the various pastries I got and almost immediately devoured. You’ll find fresh produce, baked goods, jams and spreads, olives, oils, meats, cheeses, you name it! And, spoiler alert: all of it is amazing.
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Haggis sausage roll
- Whatever else your heart desires!
10. Byron Burgers and Fries
Surprisingly, I did not order a burger from Byron Burgers & Fries–but I did get bacon cheese fries, and those were outstanding. The mac and cheese could have been creamier, but it was still yummy (and I also have ridiculously high standards for mac and cheese). Definitely recommend if you’re craving a carby, cheesy late night snack!
WHAT TO ORDER:
- Bacon cheese fries
